Pain in the Groin - Hernia Repair

Many a times a groin pain may be caused by minor injuries which are not even noticed by victims. When you have been persistently suffering from pain in the groin you are advised to monitor whether it is associated with signs of illnesses as well or not. Mostly pain is the early sign of inguinal hernia which leads to a bulge in the groin, noticeable when the groin area is strained while standing up or coughing.

Generally watchful waiting is advised in cases of inguinal hernia. In case, you are required undergoing a surgery, most surgeons will advise a laparoscopic inguinal hernia surgery rather than the traditional open surgeries since it entails lesser risks of pain. The hernia primarily occurs when the inner layers of the abdominal muscle are weakened. The abdomen lining swells in to a sac with part of the intestinal or the abdominal tissue entering the sac and it can cause serious problems such as bowel obstruction. Left untreated, hernia might lead to a condition called strangulation where a piece of fatty tissue and part of intestine are ensnared inside the hernia—totally cut off from blood supply.

1. What is the procedure?

Inguinal hernia is primarily cured by the placing of a surgical mesh over the hernia from behind the abdominal wall. Alternatively known as the keyhole surgery, the laparoscopic surgery includes the creation of small incisions in your body through which the laparoscopic instrument is inserted and the surgeon gets to operate the hernia with the help of data from the high-resolution image of the affected area.  The surgeons at the Beams Hospital are adept at carrying out the entire surgery without major risks:

  • A very few incisions are made in your body.
  • The laparoscope goes through one of these holes while the other surgical instruments are inserted through other holes.
  • The surgical mesh is placed and secured in position by means of stapling it with the aid of tiny surgical staples.
  • The entire procedure takes place under general anesthesia.

2. Benefits/Appropriate

There are several reasons why laparoscopic approach to surgery is preferred to open surgeries. They involve

Faster recovery

Lesser post-operative pain

Very few scars

Fewer chances of infection

Shorter hospital stay (the patient can be discharged on that day itself!)

3. Appropriate For

We would only advice surgery for you after we are convinced after our “watchful waiting” that you need one. If you have a small hernia or its symptoms are small you won’t be required to undergo an operation. Only when the hernia gets bigger with the weakening of the muscles, will we advice a surgery.

4. Before surgery

We will carry out thorough physical tests in a bid to find out whether your physical condition will be able to endure the stress of a major operation or not. You might be asked to refrain from consuming certain medicines (if you are taking them) a few days before the surgery. An enema is advised for those who have difficulty in moving bowel. People who suffer from substantial blood clots or are too much in to smoking might require special preparations.

5. Recovery

You might as well require 24 to 48 hours to come out of the feeling of soreness. You will be discharged on the same day or just the day after.

6. After care

You are advised to take it easy for the first few days after coming back home. Refrain from indulging in activities that cause a pressure in the groin area. Take short walks to avoid blood clots and drink lots of water

7. Risk & complications

There are risks of becoming carcinogenic of suffering relapses as well.
